So you're looking at your old VHS camcorder and thinking that it may be time to update to some of the newer models. But where should you start? Should you just go in the store and buy one that they sell? Absolutely not!
Although nowadays we can find HD camcorders on the shelves, I would still recommend waiting a bit as these camcorders are of the newest technology - a technology who is still defining its parameters.
So, for now, I would suggest sticking with the DV models (Digital Video). You can find some DVD video camera out there and these are fine if you wish to burn directly to DVD, but be aware that many of these discs are good only for around 30 minutes and they are much more expensive than any good quality 60 minutes DV tapes... As for the Hi 8 camcorder, I would suggest forgetting about them as they are old technology.
The best thing before purchasing any camcorder, whether it be a Sony Mini DV camcorder (www.sony.com) or a JVC (www.jvc.com), is to have a look at the different specifications of the camera and compare it to other models. Such things to compare is : 1) Format size - offers Standard (4:3) or Widescreen (16:9); 2) Works with AC adapter - can it also charge battery at same time; 3) Zoom options - 16x, 200x, 500x... These are some of the things you should have a look and compare. Also, comparing camcorder accessories might be a good thing - some companies offer a bag, extra batteries, etc...
But I believe that the main thing - once you have narrowed your choices to 2 or 3 - is to go and hold the camera. Although the model you prefer might have all the best features, it may seem akward when holding it.
You can check out the latest Panasonic Mini DV camcorder at www.panasonic.com or use the Internet to search for a specific model.
Have fun shopping!
