The Yorkshire Terrier (commonly referred to as a “Yorkie” ) is a great breed of dog. It is a so-called “Toy Dog”, although, most animal lovers would agree that this term has a negative connotation. Although getting your children a Yorkie is a beautiful gift, remember that it is a creature not a “toy” and thus requires care and is not disposable. That being said, Yorkies are generally very good with children. They are also ideal for living situations with limited space such as apartments and condominiums.
A Yorkshire Terrier is a very brave breed of dog is often (sometimes to it’s detriment) unaware of it’s own small size when showing such bravery. Yorkies can also be quite stubborn and controlling so it is essential that owners lay down the law early before the little squirts decide to take rule. They can also be quite the attention junky so proper training will help in making the dog more independent. Of course, the most striking trait of this breed has not yet been mentioned: Yorkies are so darn cute!!! Unlike other “toy dogs” (such as the Chihuahua…), a Yorkie can be just as suited for a man as for a woman (matching purse is not mandatory!).
Given their size, food is very inexpensive as they do not eat as much as the average K-9. BE sure, however, to feed them only quality food to keep them healthy. Healthy Yorkie can live to be anywhere from 10-15 years. They are very playful, bold (as mentioned above), intelligent, and loyal. They tend to be a little yappy, so it may take some training efforts to teach them to stay quiet. All in all, the Yorkie is a great breed to adopt and can bring much joy into its owner’s life.
