Stanford Junior University, also known as The Leland Stanford University, is a private research university located in Stanford, California.
Stanford is one the most highly rated university's in the world. Situated between San Francisco and San Jose, in the heart of Silicon Valley, it is no wonder that it is one of the leading research and teaching institutions.
Stanford was founded in 1885 by former California governor and senator Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, as a memorial to their son Leland Stanford, Jr. who died of typhoid in Europe. The family used their own farm lands to establish the university hoping to create a large educational institution in California. The University has gone a long way in maintaining the goal the Stanford’s' had of "promoting the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization".

The Stanford Law School or Stanford Law as it is commonly called, is located near Palo Alto. The Law School was established in 1893 when former President Benjamin Harrison joined the faculty as the first professor of law. Former Associate Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court is an alumnus. The Stanford Law School is ranked third in the United States behind only Yale and Harvard Law Schools. It offers its students a curriculum that begins with the fundamentals and expands to provide its students with interdisciplinary learning opportunities helping them to become lawyers who make a difference.
What is any school without an athletic program, and Stanford has much to offer in the way of athletics. Stanford offers 34 varsity sports, 19 club sports and 37 intramural sports. When Stanford plays the University of California at Berkeley, a rivalry that started in 1982, the winner of that game gains custody of the "Stanford Axe", a trophy that consists of an axe head mounted on a large wooden plaque along with scores of past Big Games. Stanford football has a long history and rich tradition which continues today.
