Every product has certain specifications by which it must abide in order to be put on the consumer market. In manufacturing and business industry it is important that suppliers, purchasers and users of products and materials to agree on all requirements of all products. A specification is a type of standard, which is agreed to by the different companied usually through a purchase order, or a contract. It provides details about the requirements of material usage and quality. The government or standardized organizations like ISO, ASTM, or CEN that are trade associations or corporations may write these specifications.
As an example let’s show the digital camera. The specifications on digital cameras can be found in the instruction booklet that comes with the camera. This is common for most products.
The automobile industry also has set specifications on their assembly practices. Most have to follow strict road test conditions, and certain fuel economy specs. Even certain types of road test practices need to be performed, as well as a certain type of test drive. This is done so that car and driver will be considered as safe as possible wherever they might be.
There are also technical specifications when manufacturing cars, electronics and even appliances that need to be followed for safety reasons.
Specifications on products are usually placed there for product reliability as well as the consumer’s safety.
