In their first years of production the tracks were wide & so were the cars, some 4" in length & more. Afternoons spent racing with friends went by very quickly as the excitement did as the decorated & real life race cars roared around the track. Sometimes we won & sometimes we lost, but it was always a lot of fun!
Strombecker, Aurora, Revell, Cox, Monogram, Eldon, they were all great tracks & the cars were just amazing. As time went on the tracks got smaller & so did the cars, & it seems they go faster too! The fine detail & finishing of the later models is as close to real life as it gets. And if you were a kid & had one, you were a happy kid! The landscaping around the track, buildings, imagination was the limit & this was the toy "to have". And let's face it, a lot of us kids wanted to be real race car driver's when we grew up!
The slot car craze came to an abrupt end in the middle of the 1970's. Today there are collectors who actively seek out those early toys, those amazing slot cars! Finding them in very good condition is difficult, as these slot cars were used a lot, by a lot of different age groups too! They are fast becoming one of the hard collectibles to locate. And, condition, is EVERYTHING! However, good sets & pieces can sometimes be found at garage sales, estate sales, flea markets & auctions. Sometimes you can piece together an old Eldon or Revell, & what a thrill, when they are up & running, or racing. A step back to the past!
