Scholarships are awards of access to an institution or a financial aid award for a student to further education. Scholarships are awarded on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award.
Scholarships have many classifications. A merit scholarship is given to a recipient and may be determined by the students’ athletic, academic or other abilities. The monetary value of the scholarship may be negligible if the scholarship is meant to motivate the student and promote the study of the subject. The largest scholarships are usually merit-based. Many non-profit organizations and Charitable trusts offer undergraduate scholarships for prospective students. Community foundations also offer scholarships with many counties and cities dedicating money to give in the form of grants and scholarships to people and organizations in the local area.
The United Negro College Fund offers scholarships and college tuition money for black and minority students. It has general scholarship funds for 9 private historically black colleges and universities. It offers minority scholarships to over 65,000 students at over 900 colleges and universities nationwide. Though set up to address funding inequities in education resources for African Americans, the UNCF administered scholarships are open to all ethnicities.
High school scholarships are often awarded to outstanding high school students who have already enrolled in a four year degree program. Many times high schools work in conjunction with area colleges and universities in various degree programs such as education or engineering and will help promote the college or university by offering scholarships to deserving students.
Those wishing to go into education should know that there are multiple education scholarships available. Most colleges and universities offer some type of education scholarship program for those wishing to teach. For students wishing to specialize in special education, scholarship money is usually readily available.
