For many, it is a common word but for others, it is pure jargon. The word ROM stands for Read only Memory; a small device containing data which is installed inside computers. But another use for the word would be to describe games that can be played on a computer, sometimes referred as a ROM Image. Those ROMs are small files containing data that has been copied from the original game cartridge. It uses what we call an Emulator, which translate the data in the ROM to allow the user to play the game. The most common ones would be Nintendo and Super Nintendo ROMs. Easy to download and quite simple to use, just about anyone can enjoy them. Less common yet still popular would be the Sega Genesis ROMs. Many websites will offer free download for those ROMs, but also many of them will giveaway fake ones, commonly seen for Gameboy Advanced ROMs. If a game was originally from a cartridge especially an older game, Nintendo for example, it can almost be assured that there will be a working downloadable ROM for it. But as seen for consoles that are using CD-Roms, the supposedly ROMs for those will most likely be fake. It is the case for those websites telling gamers they can download Playstation ROMs. The same can be seen for Sega CD ROMs. The best and safest way to enjoy ROMs is to download them from a renowned website and to keep yourself informed on what is new in the world of video games!!
