The pyramids of Egypt are one of the greatest wonders of the world. Some of the pyramids date more than 4000 years and are still standing strong as they did when they were first constructed.
The pyramids are one of the main reasons for the high rates of tourism in Egypt. There is controversy over which civilisation actually built the pyramids -was it African or was it Arab? Nonetheless the pyramids are a sight to behold and are a must visit when in Egypt. They served as burial grounds for the ancient rulers of Egypt known as the pharaohs. Each successive ruler tried to build a pyramid that was more grandiose than that of his predecessor.
Burials were lavish and today archaeologists have been able to reveal to us the extent of this lavishness. Rulers were buried with their most priced possessions like gold and even servants to serve them in their other life. Their bodies were elaborately preserved using highly advanced embalming processes. A good number of the mummies that have been revealed in modern times were intact attesting to the skill of that culture 4000 years ago before modern science.
The wonder effect of the pyramids comes form the fact that the architects were able to accomplish complex building task using very little of the kind of technology that were have today. Tools were rudimentary and the terrain was harsh. Everything had to be done by hand and the heavy stone blocks had to be lifted several metres to the top of the pyramids to complete them. Water was scarce both for building and for the workforce but their sense pf planning and organisation proves to have been enough as the pyramids still stand today.
