Oprah Winfrey is a multi-faceted personality. She is a widely acclaimed American television host, well-known media moghul and a noted philanthropist. Her internationally-syndicated talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show has earned her several Emmy awards. She is acknowledged as the richest African American and the world's only black biilinoire. Winfrey publishes two magazines: ‘O, The Oprah Magazine’ and ‘O at Home’. She has, to date, co-authored five books and to say she is a voracious reader, is to state the obvious.
A few times each year, Oprah announces the title of the book to be featured in Oprah's Book Club. The following are her three notable recent picks:
January 2008: A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Toll
October 2007: Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
January 2007: The Measure of a Man by Sidney Poitier.
During the first few years after she started her book club, Oprah would invite the author of the book she picked and few of her favorite viewers to dinner to review the book. The author and viewers would then appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss the book with the studio audience. Lately, of course, Oprah has been selecting works of classic literature.
Oprah Winfrey announced last week she has chosen as her latest book club pick David Wroblewski's ‘The Story of Edgar Sawtelle’, calling the author’s debut novel a classic and the best novel she had read in a long, long, long time. "I think this book is right up there with the greatest American novels ever written" said Winfrey, at the end of "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The 500-page novel had ranked ninth on the New York Times Best Seller list this week. It is certain to climb further up after a little sticker appears on the cover proclaiming the book as one of Winfrey's book club selections.
