On the 4th day of November 2008, Obama was elected the 44th president of the United States in a big win. Obama won 56 seats in the senate and 254 seats in the house. He defeated John McCain from the Republican Party although McCain had an important number of votes too.

Obama's win is also America's historic win because as an African American few thought that he would be elected. As Obama, McCain and Bush have said in their speeches it is a statement of the political majority of the American people. Oprah Winfrey one of his earliest supporters was at the Chicago’s Grand Park and said it was a victory for 'hope'. Colin Powell a republican who endorsed Obama’s candidature wept as he watched the historic event. McCain recognised the significance of the win for African Americans adding that it was indeed a different America and that proud bigotry was a thing of the past for Americans. For Obama he told Americans that it was their victory and that change had come to America.

After 21 months of hard campaigning Obama clinched the highest seat in America. There was bitter sweat end to the campaign as his grandmother Madely Dunham passed away on Monday just one day shy of witnessing his victory. His grandmother was very instrumental in moulding Obama into the man he became. He will be sworn in on January 20, 2009.

In Kenya, where his father was born, celebrations that had been planned quietly went full swing as soon as CNN cut to the chase and declared Obama the winner. Kenyans have declared this Thursday a public holiday to celebrate Obama’s election. This is just a formal day off but celebrations started as soon as CNN made the announcement.

Around the world the attention was directed towards America and how they would vote. For Obama, he wants the world to see the greatness of America not in her wealth or the might her weapons but in its enduring ideals of democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope. The same way he campaigned, Obama vowed to bring American people together.
