Neurontin was originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of epilepsy. In 2002, gabapentin, generic Neurontin, was approved for treating pain in people who suffer from shingles and other nerve pain related illnesses. It is also used for the treatment of methamphetamine, cocaine and alcohol addiction. It has also been prescribed for to menopausal patients to reduce the recurrence of hot flashes.
Gabapentin Neurontin is frequently used for various types of pain. Physicians have found it to be effective in the prevention of recurrent migraine headaches, disorders of the nerves, and disorders of the eyes. Use for these illnesses is considered “off label”, but is widely prescribed by doctors and physicians for these illnesses. Side effects of Neurontin include dizziness, swelling of the hands and feet, concentration problems, drowsiness, and hyperactivity. Another side effect of Neurontin may also be anxiety. Neurotin comes in tablet and capsule form. Neurontin 300 mg and 400 mg are the most common in capsule form. In capsule form Neurontin is formulated in 600 mg and 800 mg. Most therapies require that you start with the 300 mg dose one time daily and increase over time to three times daily.
