Most of remember growing up with the Monopoly game. It was a great pastime & fortunes were won & lost in an afternoon. Some of the games lasted a long time too & there was so much to do with all that buying property, paying fines, & also, going to Jail!
Everyone could play Monopoly because the rules were quite easy to follow. Introduced by Parker Brothers in 1935, kids could do some banking, real estate transacting, & risk taking too! Monopoly was a great rainey day game & people all over the world were playing.
According to Parker Brothers, over 250,000,000 people have played the game of Monopoly. 2 sets of cards, $15,000 in play money, & an assortment of little plastic houses & hotels. Real estate in the earlier games of Monopoly were made of wood.
Atlantic City, Park Place, Boardwalk, Marvin Gardens, are all places that we have been on the Monopoly board at some time in our lives. A hotel on Boardwalk could bring in some very good money, while Baltic & Meditteranean Avenues were low rent districts & payed very little.
Spending time in jail usually cost us some money just like in real life & we were glad to get released. Back in the game we could protect our property & collect our rents & maybe.......get rich!
Monopoly was a very special game & games became more & more special as far as toys were concerned. They could be played by many & even by few. Some of the earlier Monopoly games are very collectible especially if all of the original pieces are still there. Often the boxes are quite damaged & pieces have been lost so check carefully.
Each generation continues to buy & play the game of Monopoly & it doesn't appear to be losing any of it's popularity. It was an amazing game & so many of us enjoyed playing that it will remain in our hearts for a long time, that game of Monopoly.
