Okay, so you know how much I love designer clothes and accessories and how much I love cars. But let’s talk about Hollywood. Marilyn Monroe is by far my favorite Hollywood actress. Although not much of a fan of many of her movies, Marilyn’s style is what I have admired most. She did things that other actresses were scared to do. She was not afraid of her body or her looks and maximized the opportunity whenever she could.
Born Norma Jean Mortenson, Marilyn came out of a life of hardship. Spending much of her childhood in foster homes, she began her humble career as a model and that led to a film contract in 1946. My favorite movie, All About Eve, was one of Marilyn’s first movies. Marylyn was a student of the Actor’s Studio where she formed Marilyn Monroe Productions. This is a side of Marilyn that most of us never knew about and it was seen in her performance in William Inge’s Bus Stop. Hailed by critics and loved by audiences, she won a Golden Globe Award for her performance in Some Like It Hot.
When Marilyn’s first husband, James Dougherty was in World War II, she worked at a factory where she sprayed airplane parts with fire retardant and inspected parachutes. A photographer took her picture for Yank magazine and encouraged Marilyn to apply at a local modeling agency. When she was signed with the agency, she began studying Lana Turner and Jean Harlow. This inspired her to color her hair blonde with the encouragement of the modeling agency. After that, she became one of Blue Book Modeling Agency’s most popular models.
It wad during the filming of Niagara, another of my favorite Marilyn Monroe picture film with Joseph Cotten, that Marilyn began to receive the attention she had been looking for. While critics claimed that her performance was overtly sexual, it is during this film that Marilyn acquired “the look”.
I love the Andy Warhol Marilyn with his variations of color and photography. You can see his pop art print of Marlyn on various websites and at various art museums around the world. Marilyn Monroe pics and posters are still huge sellers and can be bought almost anywhere. If you purchase My Story, Marilyn’s autobiography, you will see a variety of Marilyn Monroe photo and memorabilia. Marilyn Monroe impersonators are also plentiful and if you check your local listings, you may be able to find a club or cabaret with a Marilyn impersonator in full Marilyn dress.
