Christmas is upon us and along with it come many Christmas traditions. Many come in the form of decor such as the putting up of Christmas lights, the Christmas tree, and the exchanging of gifts. There are also mealtime traditions such as Christmas Hams, Christmas Turkey, stuffing, candy canes, and of course, Gingerbread men cookies! The lovable character on Disney’s Shrek makes the gingerbread man even more popular lately. So you are in a holiday spirit and would like to bake some holiday cookies. Need a recipe? In a bowl, mix together ½ a cup of butter with ½ cup of sugar until you acquire a smooth consistency. Next you need to stir in ½ cup of molasses and one egg yolk. After this is done, add 2 cups of sifted flour, ½ teaspoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ a teaspoon of baking soda. Stir thoroughly. Next add a ½ a teaspoon of cinnamon, ½ a teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1 full teaspoon of ginger. Stir-stir-stir!
The oven should be preheated at 350 degrees (175 degrees C). Roll the dough out to ¼ inch thickness on a floured surface. Now is the time to get creative! Cut out the desired shapes whether it be gingerbread men or whatever you creative heart desires. Place the cookies on an ungreased cookie baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Allow time for the cookies to cool down before decoration them and voila! Gingerbread men for everyone!
