The Isle of Wight is an English island and a county, located 5–8 km from the south coast of the mainland, in the English Channel. It is separated from mainland England by the Solent and is situated south of the county of Hampshire. The island has a rich history, including a brief status as an independent kingdom in the 15th century. It was home to the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Queen Victoria built her much loved summer residence and final home Osborne House at East Cowes. how to build a hovercraft? A lot of hand waving. For a real understanding of the Ground Effect, look it up. The ground effect principal notes that the air between a falling object and the earth has some viscosity. The falling object seeks to displace some differential volume of air equal to dV=A ds, where A is the surface area of the object normal to the velocity and dh is the differential distance that the object displaces. At the same time the air can escape from the falling object only over a surface area of approximately S=2 s (A pi)^0.5 assuming that s is primarily in the z direction. So, the approximate differential volume of air displaced sideways is dv2=S dx where dx is the differential sideways displacement. An interesting point to analyze in this system is that where ds=dx. At this point A=4 s^2 pi. So for a disk shaped object with a radius of 2 meters, s is one meter. Somewhere near this point, the ground effect becomes significant. For smaller s, say 0.2 meters, the effect is key to understanding system behavior. The two systems it works on are:
