All the old tongue-and-groove was covered with a couple coats of primer prior to painting. I'm sure we should have (at least rough-)sanded first, but would you want to sand all those grooves?!

As you can see by the colorful edging, those are grass beach mats. (CHEAP!)

We built custom soffits that formed a giant "U" around 3 walls of the room. On the two walls that were entirely windows, we left about a 3 inch gap behind the soffits. This made room for the (elegant, chocolate brown velvet theater) curtains and hid the traverse curtain rods. I was worried that it was going to look odd, but it didn't at all when it was finished.
