I love the French and Italian designers, but as an American, those that come from home, have my heart. Roy Halston Frowick epitomizes what comes from the American heartland. Born in 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa, Halston revolutionized the fashion industry.
Halston moved to New York City in late 1957, first working for milliner Lilly Dache. Within a year he became the co-designer at Dache’. After working for Dache for a time, Halston became the head milliner for Bergdorf Goodman department stores.
You and I best know Halston for the coveted Jackie Kennedy “pillbox” hat that she wore to her husband’s inauguration. After that, Halston was dubbed the premier fashion designer of all America. More commonly known for his long, flowing dresses during the discotheque heydays in the 1970’s, Halston made his imprint on the fashion industry. His clothes and designs have been worn by Bianca Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor and Anjelica Huston. Something that I didn’t know, Halston was influential in airline uniform designs. That’s how good he was. He was known as the master of detail, cut and finish.
Halston fragrance won the FiFi Fragrance of the Year award in 1976, putting Halston on the map with another dimension of his style. What I have always liked about the Halston line is that it has always been accessible. While some items are pricey, they are still considerably less than what you would pay for a Dior or Versace.
