The factory outlet began when apparel and shoe mill stores began offering their excess and damaged goods to their employees in the 1800's.
In 1936 Anderson-Little a mens clothes manufacturer opened the first factory outlet. The stores were located in remote areas. Factory outlets continued to grow during the following 40 to 50 year period. The huge factory outlet mall began to appear outside of major urban areas. In the beginning the were mainly centers used to dispose of over runs and damaged merchandise.

The first outdoor strip mall for outlet stores apeared in 1981 in Burlington North Carolina. The reason these malls appeared was the consumers demand for designer label clothin and design patterns.
Today you can find all kinds of outlet stores, even electronic outlets where you can find the typical car stereo equipment and even the cd player equipment. In fact, car audio equipment, and music have become the factory outlet hot items of today.
