There are many reasons for undertaking excavation work. The most common is probably for new land to be turned into commercial property or new housing. Land needs to be cleared and usually some excavation is necessary to ensure a flat and solid foundation.
Some people choose to excavate areas of their existing home to avoid having to put their house up for sale. At times excavating under a building can create much needed space such as extra bedrooms or a basement. Possibly a house may be sinking and excavation is needed.
Whatever the reason is excavation work is needed health and safety is a major issue. Excavation involves heavy equipment (unless using a toothbrush on an ancient Greek excavation). On building sites there are strict regulations and guidelines that need to be followed to ensure safety. If you choose to do your own excavations you should do the same.
For small areas of excavation work around the home it may be cheaper to hire skid steer and do the work yourself. If you have a little bit of DIY knowledge this isn’t too difficult. Always be aware though of any water pipes or electrical cables that may be buried underground. If you are dealing with large areas, or under buildings it is probably wisest and safest to employ excavating contractors.
Using excavation contractors makes sense for anything other than relatively minor jobs. You are more likely to be covered by insurance if you have qualified people working for you. You don’t have to do the work yourself and it will (probably) be completed more quickly.
Even if you choose to do any excavations yourself it would pay to get a contractor to look over the job first. Make sure you obtain any permits that may be required for alterations. Be sure you know how to operate any vehicle or other equipment you may need.
Undertaking excavation work needn’t be too expensive, but you do need to weigh up the true costs of doing your own work or hiring professional to do it for you.
