First things first… eMule is a software – it is not another type of mule. Some novices may be unaware of this. More importantly, it is a software that is built on the P2P or Peer to Peer file sharing model mainly written for Microsoft Windows. Hence, it is often referred to as eMule P2P. Other similar software are Bittorrent and Bitcomet. It is several times confused with another software called eMule Donkey.
eMule was originally begun as an alternative to eDonkey 2000 though its popularity in later years outgrew it fast. It was started as a project on May 13, 2002. The original author of eMule then was Hendrik Breitkreuz who was known as Merkur. Merkur’s motivation to kick-start the eMule project was based on his dissatisfaction with eDonkey 2000 client.
Since that point, eMule has seen rapid progress. eMule servers now include eDonkey and Kad networks. The basis of eMule software is the direct exchange of data or sources between client nodes. eMule also assists in recovering corrupted downloads quickly. zLib compressed form of transmission downloads speed up eMule even further.
One of the most common uses eMule is put to is downloading mp3 and therefore users frequently term it as eMule mp3. It is the top most download on SourceForge, a repository for software. Significantly, any user can download eMule Pro completely free of cost. In fact, it has been a free software since July of 2002. The eMule software is coded under Microsoft Visual C++ utilising Microsoft Foundation Classes. It is released under the General Public License or GPU.
