Of all the musicians vital to a band the drummer holds the key. If you have that beat in your head, don’t deny yourself. Go ahead and get a drum set Too expensive? Well maybe. Good drum kits don’t come cheap. If you are not sure, there are options to start up a little smaller and develop your skills.
If you are one of those people who were always being told off by your teacher for drumming on the desk with your fingers or a pencil you probably have what it takes. Before investing in a full drum set though, it could be worth playing around and learning a little. If you have a friend who owns drums then beg, plead and pay your way to have some practice time. If you are lucky they might even give you some pointers and show you a few tricks you can use. Then again you might lose a friend.
The next step is to get your hands on any kind of drum. African hand drums are great for just getting a feel for different rhythms and letting your self go. If you want to learn to play on a full modern drum set though the first thing you will want is a pair of drumsticks and a snare drum. While you can’t get the full co-ordination of using a full drum set with just a snare drum, you can learn and perfect some basics.
When you are ready and can afford your first full drumset think about quality as well as cost. You are better to wait for a set that is going to last you several years than throw your money away on junk. Electronic drums are well worth looking at and seem to have a great future in the music world. If you are more inclined towards a traditional drum set I would strongly recommend pearl drums. They have an excellent reputation and you can build on your kit as your budget allows.
Naturally talented or not, it’s probably also worth investing a bit of money in some drum lessons just to get your self off to a good start. Once you have the basics you can find some good courses online or just go do your own thing. Drumming is almost the ultimate experience in music so why not have a go.
