Nearly five years ago, divx first became available in the internet to download as the ace divx player. This package deal consisted of the divx video player, with a video codec ( a piece of software that can recognize unrecognizable files in prior) to play divx video files. Combined with the divx audio codec, the player was downloaded hundreds of millions of times by many users and is now present on almost anyones computer. With the divx package, high quality DVD movies can be ripped and compressed into 500 to 900 MB files that can be shared online. These files have almost the same quality as the DVDs but are much smaller in size. This huge advantage made divx the best tool to rip movies and the most recognizable video format after .avi. If you are not a Windows user, do not be worried. Divx player for mac can also be found on the internet. The success of the Divx player is evidentially proven when a divx player for pocket PC can even be found on the internet. Xvid has followed suit, releasing a similar program, but will not be able to achieve the same status that divx has on the internet for years to come.
