Davy Crockett was certainly a hero to many young kids growing up from the 1950's on. American history was transformed for the U.S. public & showed it's face on the nation's toys.
Davy Crockett began with 3, 1 hour episodes per week back in 1954. The Disney series was a year old at this time & Davy Crockett toys began to be collected even at this early stage.
Davy Crockett At The Alamo, an incredible 100 piece toy set produced by Louis Marx, acardboard Alamo construction, along with the figures, horses, equipment & people. And Davy Crockett was always featured in his great frontiersman costume with coon-skin hat! His adventures were being followed weekly by every alert kid in the neighborhood & his toys were enjoyed by many.
Daisy Manufacturing produced a Davy Crockett Air Rifle with canteen & powder horn. The Crockett craze was on. It only lasted a few years, but during that time many vintage toys were produced. Plastic Bowie Knives, even Davy Crockett costumes, guns, lots of coonskin caps, & of course, plastic action figures.
Today locating Davy Crockett toys from the 1950's & 1960's is very difficult. Most of the colorful vintage cardboard boxes have been destroyed, however, there are still a lot that can be had. You should have to hunt around a little at garage sales, flea markets, estate sales, & keep looking. There are a lot of accessories still out there & some original pieces as well.
