I am an avid rock climber and many people have asked me how I got into the sport. My answer has always been that I kind of fell into it and I’m definitely glad that I did.
Rock climbing has always been one of my favourite pastimes. I started as a teenager when I was given some rock climbing shoes as a gift. I just started hiking at first and found out that I really enjoyed it. Consequently my walks got longer and longer and of course I wanted it to be more challenging so I started climbing up the sides of some large hills we have in the area, then I started learning how to rock climb. My next purchase was a climbing rope, and a rock climbing harness. As time went by I was either given or bought other more sophisticated mountain climbing equipment, and rock climbing gear. Then I started going to the rock climbing centres as a way of getting my exercise and they also have more sophisticated rock climbing equipment. Soon I was going to the rock climbing centre about three times a week and wanted something more exciting so I would go out in group excursions and we would all go to the off the wall rock climbing sites. The views were spectacular and I remember feeling such a sense of accomplishment. Rock climbing has benefited me in many ways; because of it I have been able to visit many interesting places and seen some of the most ruggedly beautiful nature. I have learned to be grateful for my life and for this world, which has given all humanity so much. There is nothing like coming into contact with true nature for you to realize how miraculous this world is.
