Walt Disney Characters: Role Models with a Message

World famous Walt Disney characters continue to act as positive role models for young children. From age-old classics like Mickey Mouse, to modern-day cartoon characters such as Bolt the super-dog, Disney has contributed to the childhood imagination, encouraging and promoting the development of ethical thought and action.

Storytellers of the highest quality from the early 20th century on, Walt Disney has never skimped on a character sheet, and the characters that viewers everywhere come to know and love are a direct result of thorough and responsible development.

The movie Bambi, for instance, along with films like Pocahontas, the Jungle Book, or Finding Nemo, have encouraged children to side with the natural world and fostered an awareness of real-life threats to the environment, via the use of adorable animals that kids can sympathize with.

The occurrence of strong, prominent father figures are another good example of Disney's response to society's needs. In a time when father figures and male role models are hard to come by for many children, the father characters in films like The Little Mermaid, or Sleeping Beauty are significant. While the former features a powerful and protective authority figure with a loving heart, the latter offers an equally protective father with a little less personal power. Both are important for Children to understand.
