Carbon is one of the chemical elements in the periodic table. Its atomic number is 6 and its chemical symbol is C.It is one of the most important elements in supporting life and without it the earth wouldn’t probably survive. Several compounds are derived from carbon. One of them is carbon dioxide which is a compound of carbon and oxygen. Its chemical symbol is CO2..Though it is also useful for human existence it has certain effects that make it harmful to the environment. Carbon dioxide emissions from factories deplete the ozone layer and hence increase global warming which affects climatic conditions around the world.
Another carbon compound is carbon monoxide which is a product of incomplete combustion of carbon. Carbon monoxide poisoning has led to deaths especially where there isn’t enough ventilation and there is a stove in the room. In manufacturing carbon compounds have useful applications. High carbon steel is used in structural designs because of its strength and durability. It is one of the most useful metals in engineering construction. For instance carbon steel pipe used in buildings for plumbing are made from it. Carbon fibre is another of the derivatives of carbon and it is used in composites to reinforce their strength. It is gaining popularity nowadays because of its perceived strength and lightness. This has made several airline and car companies to make their bodies with carbon fibre. It is a very interesting field and one that engineering students will find quite fascinating.
In a nutshell carbon’s role in life cannot be overemphasized. It is only fair to say that life wouldn’t exist without carbon. The computer and electronics industry have certainly benefitted from this phenomenon as carbon has been central in the manufacture of microprocessors.
