What is the best way to hunt for a job in a recession in Canada? It is not easy and is harder if you have not job hunted in a long time. If you have been used to your company and were satisfied with your job, you will find it hard to look for a job. If you have been with your company for a long time, things have been changed and looking for a job is not the same thing again. Job openings are hard to come by now in the recession. And more so job openings are not announced the same way as they were 10 or 20 years ago.
The thing that is in now is online job searching. Of course networking may still yield good results as word of mouth is still a strong influence. If your computer skills are not a par, you better update them fast if not just for the job search they may lead to a new job. Computer skills are not a luxury and can save you life. Search engines come in handy for finding the numerous online job banks which advertise jobs daily or even weekly to willing workers. Most job banks carry multiple job listings in various filed but others are dedicated to only a certain type of field for example, they may dedicate themselves to computer and related jobs, cooking of even just writing jobs. It all depends on the focus of the site owner; some sites charge a fee for their use while others are free. Few sites charge job seekers but employers have to pay to advertise and see the resumes of job seekers.
In Canada, the government runs a job bank site at jobbank.gc.ca. This is a multiple discipline posting site. For jobs in the public service they can be found at jobs.gc.ca. Other provinces also run their job bank sites. There are also privately run sites like Joboom and Yahoo jobs to consider especially for professional fields like engineering.
