We can get enough vitamins and minerals in our diet without wasting our money and maybe even deteriorate our health with over the counter supplements. calcium and vitamin d are difficult to obtain naturally in an industrialized life style. The sun on exposed skin provides some vitamin d for free. From the garden it is found in broccolis, carrots, kelp, bee pollen and sunflower seeds.
Concerning calcium side effects from taking too much supplements from the store, it happens and I would say to think of supplements as medications. They can even interact with prescribed drugs. It would be better using them after being advised by an health practitioner.
Concerning calcium, beside the dairy products nature provides calcium supplements in green leafy vegetables, cereals, legumes, nuts, seeds and tofu. It is worth researching for yourself where you can get naturally what your body needs to strive.
For example, I get extra vitamin c from lemon juice I crush in a glass of water. The vitamin e is so fragile, it can have the opposite effect you have expected in it is affected by light, temperature or even get contaminated with your own fingers.
