Having grown up in the 1950's, one of the most fun toys I had was my CHEERIO YO YO. I had a red one with diamonds on the sides! Well, actually, they were tiny glass inserts, & they looked great, especially when the Yo Yo was spinning!
The Yo Yo was invented back in the 1920's & it died out during the Depression. Then the fad took off again in the 1950's & has been going strong ever since. They make Yo Yo's today in plastic & wood with all sorts of designs & in various sizes!
When I was a little boy, I already knew that the CHEERIO YO YO'S were the best! One day the CHEERIO YOYO CHAMPION came to a local shopping centre in my area & I went to try out. I can't remember what I was trying out for but when I got home I was a CHEERIO YOYO CHAMPION & had a little badge to prove it! I had passed the test with other kids & was now CERTIFIED! Boy did I feel good!
I could never learn how to "rock the cradle" very well, but I amused myself for hours with that CHEERIO YOYO. "Walking the Dog" was one trick that I did master, after a whole lot of practice though! Sometimes I could do a few tricks & even repair a broken string.
There were a lot of interesting toys for children to play with back in the 1950's. Finding some of them today is a real thrill! I wonder if CHEERIO YO YO'S still exist today, I just can't imagine the world without them!
