March 27, 1625, Charles 1 became the King of Britain & Ireland. He was the second son of King James 1, a religious man, short, shy, & with a stammer. His Catholic beliefs led to a Civil War & the King was defeated by Oliver Cromwell & his New Model Army in 1645. A year later the King surrendered to the Scots, escaping to the Isle of Wight in 1647. He helped instigate the 2nd Civil War in 1648 & was convicted of treason & beheaded January 30, 1649 outside the Banqueting Hall of Whitehall.
The country was now a Commonwealth & Cromwell was the Lord Protector. In 1660 the Monarchy returned with the arrival of Charles 11. He was a great relief for the people & inspired hope & enthusiasm towards the future. Life had been difficult under the long arm of Oliver Cromwell.
British history is a neverending store of the British people, monarchy & common, all sharing the same history.
The Great Plague of 1665 & the Great Fires of London in 1666, just added more strife to some very hard times. The people endured & continued to endure to this very day.
Britain is saturated in history & continues to produce more every year. The characters involved are always colorful, interesting, & often intriguing.
