Blu-ray disc is an optical disc storage medium that was designed by Sony to supersede the standard dvd format. Its main application is in the high definition video and blu ray capacity for storage 50 GB per disc.It has the same dimensions as the standard DVDs or cds.It derives its name the blue laser used to read the disc. Whereas a standard DVD uses a 650 nanometer red laser, blue ray uses a shorter wavelength of 405 nanometer blue laser. It allows for six times more storage than a standard dvd.Blu ray dvd player produced by Sony are also quite classy.Blu ray quality is certainly higher than that of the standard dvd and cd.

Blue ray disc is developed by the blu-ray disc association; a group that represents the makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures.It competed with the Toshiba HD DVD format but the war ended when the Toshiba could not sustain the war.Blu ray disc player is also made by Sony and has a considerably wide penetration in developed countries. It has however no started penetrating the developing countries.

Blu ray savings can improve on the storage space of the computer. It has the same capacity as most hard disks and thus you will not have to buy expensive hard disks. The first blu ray CDs and DVDs were shipped in 2006.The DVD players were absorbed faster in the market. The earliest releases used MPEG-2 video compression which is the same method used on standard DVDs. Some of the brands that are closely linked to the blu ray is the Mini Blu-ray Disc and the mini blu-ray.
