The beaver; a symbol of the North American wilderness, a character mocked and loved in children's television, hunted and killed by some as a pest and ferociously defended by conservationists and ecologists. The beaver is an animal that appears in the histories and arts of people throughout North America and to a lesser extent in Europe, where other more frightening emblems have been historically preferred. Beavers are peaceful and solitary creatures that make their homes in stick huts called dams they widdle down with their enormous teeth. The beavers' teeth grow continuously for their entire lives, and for the reason it is imperative that the continue to cut down trees in order to keep their teeth at a reasonable length.
The beaver population is an ancient one, and when the settlers first came to North American by the thousands, hoping to build better lives for themselves and their offspring, the beaver was significant in the image of North America as a land of plenty. For this reason the beaver has an integral role in the symbol of the cornucopia used at thanksgiving each year.
Beaver populations rise and fall, and for this reason it is sometimes necessary to have a beaver hunt from the existing segment. For this reason, angry beavers are often portrayed in media.
Leave it to beaver was a popular television show of this nature.
