For the majority of us, memories of childhood holidays invariably bring images of some atlantic beach motel. They were merely cabins as I recall, with a handkerchief size kitchen, but only steps from the sandy beach and great ocean.
Our way of life has changed dramatically over the last four decades, cheap travels make all sorts of exotic destinations available to us, but still the family motel by the beach has kept its appeal... perhaps because it changed with us. A look at pictures of any of the myrtle beach sc motel will convince you; from the Oceanaire to the Atlantic Paradise, they're hotels more than motels, providing the kind of luxury we wouldn't have dreamed of in the fifties. As for Florida, I can tell you that no gulf beach motel or south beach motel looks like those on the photos my aunt Clara brought from her winter holidays thirty years ago. In truth, any deerfield beach motel could serve as a movie set, with art deco furniture that brings right back to the fabulous Fifties... the prices are fully of our time however.
The family beach motel has changed, but so have we, and even if the memories we now bring from our holidays are different, we'll still cherish them for years to come.
