America's Next Top Model is a tale of bankable success by none other than former Victoria Secret lingerie fashion model and the fist African American woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated, Ms. Tyra Banks. Often abbreviated as ANTM, the show is reality TV in which around 13 or 14 American women between the ages of 18 and 25 compete for the title of "America's Next Top Model" which prizes $500,000 contract with CoverGirl magazine and representation by Elite Model Management, the best modeling agency in the world.
Tyra created the show and also serves as head judge during panel. The aspiring models have to go through a series of challenges and photoshoots and are then judged after each episode on their personality, photo, attitude and model appeal. At the end of each episode, a girl is sent home. The public does not vote (like in American Idol) for their favorite girl, instead, the panel of judges will decide who to keep and who to toss.
The first season premiere was in 2003 and is one of UPN's highest rated shows where ANTM is now a regular since their 7th cycle with the network now named the CW.
In order to participate to ANTM, girls from all over the country will attend auditions and send in their personal videotapes of their "fierce" runway walks and portfolio of pictures if they have any. Then, Tyra and her cohorts will meet with all the girls and pick the top 30. These girls will then go through a photoshoot and eventually be picked for the top thirteen or as this cycle calls them: "The fierce fourteen".
