Named after the Muskogean Indian Tribe, Alabama is located just below the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers. The word Alabama itself is believed to have originated from the Choctaw language. The University of Alabama, noted as the state's first public college, is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The University carries the honor of being one of the top schools in the nation to have students in the National Merit, National Hispanic and National Achievement Scholars. They offer bachelors, masters, education specialist and doctoral degrees. They also offer the only publicly supported law school in Alabama. The University of Alabama is the prize of Alabama schools and worth the effort to see what they have to offer the college bound student.
Alabama Crimson Tide football is Alabama football! The Crimson Tide program is the most nationally known of all Alabama's intercollegiate athletics programs. Started in 1892, it is one of the oldest and most tradition rich football programs in the United States. You can check out games at the Bryant Denny Stadium and watch the Tide Roll! Gadsden Alabama, located in northeastern Alabama is approximately 60 miles northeast of Birmingham, Alabama. Points of interest in Gadsden include the Noccalula Falls Park, the Gilliland Reese Covered Bridge, the Coosa River and the infamous Lookout Mountain. These sites deserve a visit when you go. Cullman Alabama, located approximately 50 miles north of Birmingham, is home to country musician Roger Hallmark and Pulitzer Prize winner journalist Harold E. Martin. Located on top of Brindley Mountain plateau and is the south most extension of the Appalachian Mountains. Cullman is rich in German heritage and holds an annual Oktoberfest during the fall.
Montgomery Alabama is the capitol and second most populous city in Alabama. It is the fourth most populous metropolitan are in the southern United States and is located in the center of the state in what is known as the Gulf Coastal Plain. Montgomery was a primary site in the African American Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Selma to Montgomery marches. Home to the Maxwell Air Force base and Alabama State University, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Montgomery is definitely a must see if you go to Alabama. Alabama offers a variety of sites and things to do for anyone who travels there.
