The history of the British people & their Monarchy is always the story of struggles, battles lost & many won. The continuity of the Royal line runs hand in hand with the evolvement of the British people as a whole.
When George V died in 1936, his son Edward Prince of Wales succeeded him. He had served as in the Grenadier Guards during the 1st World War & was well liked by the people. However, when the King announced his abdication in a radio broadcast December 11, 1936 & left for Europe, & married Wallis Simpson, he became the Duke of Windsor.
Together they lived in exile in France for most of their lives. The Duke's mother never forgave him for marrying Simpson & this caused a lot of pain for Edward. His last words before dying were Mama, Mama, Mama.
There had not been an abdication since the 14th century. The Duke died in 1972 at his home in France. Wallis Simpson, the Royal Duchess died 14 years later, in 1986.
The story of Edward, his abdication, his life, & his love for his woman Wallis Simpson, is a story of England & it's Royal family.
Much of history has been recorded throughout Great Britain & kept in their museums & a travel tour can include visits to these major museums. Of course, London is tops on anyone's list, but a little bit of research can help a lot, because Britain is a big place.
Walking back into the past & looking at the life of another human being is one of the greatest honors we can bestow on that person. The people themselves are gone, but their alive forever in our memories.
