Swami Vivekanada in the late 19th century introduced Asana in USA. He found a great spiritual hunger in the American society which became more materialistic due to growing capitalism. It prompted him to introduce yoga to the US. Today yoga has a total of 16.5 million American adherents. According to the Asana Journal, exercise courses and other related materials generated surprising revenue that would total to US$ 3 billion every year. Studies show that yoga has therapeutic effect on some of the illnesses. Physicians recommended yoga exercise to those who suffers heart disease, hypertension, asthma and back problems. Asana exercises trigger good blood circulation. At the same time, it also strengthens one’s lungs in its breathing exercise. With the goal of peaceful state of mind, yoga has proven to be an effective way in eliminating psychological stresses. Because of the number of health benefits yoga has, you would not be surprised why it became a best seller. Yoga is operating on these four principles to achieve the goal of holistic individuality. Although Asana exercises can be beneficial for its practitioners, extra precaution should also be considered. Asanas could be strenuous to some individuals who might have history of body injuries and back pains. One should consult first a physician before endeavoring to any yoga or asana sessions.
